2021-01-18

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the country is beginning the procedure for withdrawing from the Treaty on Open Skies.
The Open Skies Treaty was signed in Helsinki in March 1992 by representatives of the 23 member States of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Currently, more than thirty countries participate in it. The agreement allows free flights of unarmed reconnaissance aircraft in the airspace of the countries participating in the agreement. The equipment installed on the sides of the aircraft must be pre-approved by the parties to the Contract.
Washington's withdrawal from the important Treaty for NATO was carried out in November 2020. The US President said that participation in the Open Skies Treaty was not in America's national interest and left the Treaty. After the United States, Russia is now withdrawing from the Open Skies Treaty.
After the US and Russia withdraw from the Treaty on Open Skies, the most important agreement on international reconnaissance flights is on the verge of termination. Many pipelines often run in hard-to-reach areas of our country, which makes it difficult to monitor the condition of pipelines and increases the risk of illegal activities and violations. It is in such cases drones become an integral part of the oil and gas industry.
