The Chernobyl nuclear power plant was surveyed for the first time since 1986 with the use of a drone.
2021-01-22

All these years, since the accident in 1986, the reactor of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was heavily contaminated with radioactive waste. As a result, it was decided to use modern technologies to find out whether there was still dangerous "garbage". For the first time since the disaster, it was possible to establish that there was no radioactive waste in the reactor. The inspection of the nuclear power plant was provided with an inspection system based on the Elios shockproof quadrocopter
The protected Flyability Elios drone is now being used in the nuclear industry. The shockproof quadcopter greatly simplifies the inspection of the equipment and tanks of the nuclear reactor.
The Elios drone is used for two different tasks: conducting an annual survey of underground tanks at a nuclear power plant and inspecting a suspected leak inside the reactor vessel.
Using a quadrocopter to survey a nuclear power plant, there is no need to send personnel to a high-risk area. The inspectors did not have to wear protective clothing or go downstairs, which reduced the total time spent on the inspection of the three rooms from 1.5 hours to less than 15 minutes. A team of inspectors, reviewing the video footage captured by the copter for a possible leak, concluded that there was no leak. Clear and contrasting images allowed for a minute to inspect the valve at the top of the tank in the reactor building. Personnel did not need to go up to critical areas, which significantly reduced radiation exposure.
State tests of the KYB combat unmanned aerial vehicle developed by ZALA AERO (part of the Kalashnikov group of companies of the Rostec state corporation) will be completed in 2021. This was reported by the Kalashnikov press-service during the IDEX - 2021 international arms exhibition.
