Australia to monitor illegal activities in marine parks in drone trial

Australia's National Parks Director is looking to run a trial to use drones to monitor, detect and gather information on prohibited activities such as illegal fishing in marine parks.

The National Parks Authorities are considering the use of unmanned aerial vehicles as an alternative to traditional observation methods, which include the use of manned observation flights to monitor marine parks

Australian parks currently have an information gap about activity in that area that provides vessel monitoring systems and lacks automated identification systems. Unauthorized tourism and recreational fishing can go unnoticed.

Traditional methods for detecting small vessels, such as patrolling ships and manned aerial reconnaissance flights, can be extremely costly.

The director of the National Parks specified that the drones will transmit information from flights in real-time, record videos and photos day and night, provide accurate data on the geographical location of identified vessels and their serial numbers.

The proposed test flights will be located in four marine parks: two along the north coast of New South Wales and two off the south coast of Western Australia. Each of these areas will be surveyed at least 10 times during the designated seven-day test period.

In Russia, unmanned systems are also used to monitor safety and illegal activities on the water. EMERCOM of Russia in different regions use domestic-madeUAV ZALAto alert fishermen about the threat of coastal ice breaking, safety rules on the water, and search for violators. The volunteer organization "Liza Alert" also usesZALAunmanned systems to quickly find people both on land and on the water.
