Drone maker DJI has been blacklisted by the US government.

Drone maker DJI has been blacklisted by the US government.

The US Department of Commerce has recently added 78 companies and individuals to the "blacklist" of counterparties with whom American companies are prohibited from doing business.

There are several possible reasons for the imposition of sanctions on the Chinese manufacturer. It is believed that with the help of DJI drones, the Chinese government carried out the surveillance, thereby violating human rights in China. DJI products were allegedly used by the ruling Communist Party to spy on Uyghurs in Xinjiang, a Muslim ethnic group that primarily resides in the province.

The second assumption of the existing restrictions is also associated with a violation of the confidentiality of the data obtained from the drone. The fact is that information from flights, collected by a special software, is sent to the DJI server, and can be transferred to third parties.

One of the points of DJI's policy states: “We reserve the right to retain this data and share it with third parties in the event that it is required by law or there is a reasonable suspicion that these actions violate the laws. The data are provided at the request of the court and other government agencies. "

In any event, the US military will stop using all DJI products, including drones, software, batteries, and more.

The US Department of Commerce's decision does not prohibit DJI from selling its devices, but it does restrict Chinese access to American technology. And this can already influence the development of new models and their introduction to the world market.
