Manufacturer: BAE Systems Status: in July 2008 BAE Systems announced that it had entered into the jointly funded first phase of a programme with the UK MoD to develop the Mantis Unmanned Autonomous System (UAS) advanced concept technology demonstrator to help shape technology development for the UK's future UAS capability. Key UK industrial partners include Rolls-Royce, QinetiQ, GE Aviation, Selex Galileo and Meggitt. First flight was achieved in October 2009 at Woomera test range in South Australia. The Mantis demonstrator is powered by two Rolls-Royce RB250 turboprop engines, has a wingspan of 22m, a triplex flight control system and exploits onboard autonomy to reduce operator workload and provide increased system performance. For the first time, the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS®) will be integrated onto an unmanned aerial vehicle, BAE Systems announced today. The company, which designed and manufactures the guidance section of the laser-guided rocket, was recently awarded a U.S. Navy contract to add the APKWS onto the MQ-8B Fire Scout UAV.
